Lot 85: becomes a third seven-figure lot by Frankel and bought by Amo Racing – this colt out of the Oasis Dream mare Atone, dam of the Park Express Stakes (G3) runner-up Redressed (Le Havre).
Sold by Baroda Stud for 1,100,000gns, the colt is out of a winning own-sister to the champion older mare and six-time Grade 1 and Group 1 winner Midday, the dam of the black-type winners Midterm, Mori, Noon Star, and a half-sister to Sun Maiden, Hot Snap, and Midsummer Sun.
Under the third dam are the Group 1 winners Elmaamul, Reams Of Verse as well as the Group race winners Manifest, Modern Day, Modernise and High Walden.
The colt was bred by Yulong Investments, BBA Ireland having bought the mare from the Juddmonte draft at the Tattersalls December Mares Sale for 300,000gns in 2022. She was then the dam of two winners and yet to have a black-type performer.
David Cox of Baroda said: "He is a homebred for Yulong, he has always been a lovely horse and was a lovely foal, I am delighted to be able to bring him here. The lads have done a great job to prepare him for the sale, and Sam did a great job with him up here. He showed perfectly every day, he is a great mover, and is the image of his father. Coming here I was hoping he would make close to a million and it is great to go over that and to have Coolmore and Amo after him.
"It is a fantastic pedigree. Mr Zhang has been a great supporter, he is selling and buying here and this horse was always going to be offered. Yulong has a bunch of horses they are going to sell, a bunch to go into training, a bunch to go to Japan and some going to China, it is a worldwide operation and it is great to be involved." (15:50)
Lot 72: one of the expected stars of the day did not disappoint – the Frankel own-sister to the six-time Group 1 winner, Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (G1) winner and 2022 European champion older mare Alpinista sold for 2,500,000gns, also bought by Amo Racing.
"That pedigree, a sister to an Arc winner, that is not a lot to tell you that we don't all know!" laughed Elliott of the Staffordstown-consigned filly. "Kia has been in the game for a certain amount of years now, and to compete at the top table you have to have the best pedigrees – it is the only way to compete consistently.
"Amo has got to a level now that it is ready to try and do that, and that filly has just about the best pedigree in the book. It doesn't get any better than that. She is a fine big scopey filly, she worth a hell of a lot of money residually. We will see how she goes, we will take our time, it is very much a late developing family and she looks that physically, but we are up and running!"
He added: "We have obviously got some horses who will stand at stud, such as King Of Steel – I am not saying they will be for him, but if he proves himself good enough these mares could be ... we have got an awful lot of proving to do!
"But Kia is ready for the operation to prove itself at the next echelon and that is where we are trying to get to and that is why we need to get into these families. The fact that these horses are staying here is huge for British racing and we should all be huge cheerleaders for it."
Once he had finished dealing with well-wishers, Joorabchian said: "We need strong pedigreed fillies, and we have a lot of horses going to stud in the next year, such as Buccanero and King Of Steel, it will be this year or next year we will have to make a decision soon., and we have Persian Force already at stud. We need to back them, otherwise we are just going to get left behind – we have to back our stallions to have a chance of winning.
"It is very difficult to buy such mares because the likes of Juddmonte, Coolmores, Shadwells, all the big guys own all the big mares. So we have to come out here and hope that what we are buying in terms of pedigrees, will make us competitive.
"It is very hard to buy [such pedigrees] after yearling stage – once a filly has won a Group 1 you are in very high prices, so you have got to try and get them earlier and hope that they go on well."
Of Frankel he enthused: "Frankel has had huge success, and he just keeps on producing – the Matron Stakes was a real eye-opener, four of the field were by Frankels and one Too Darn Hot. You look at all the Frankels and what they are doing, these amazing mares and fillies, you just have to back him." (15:35)
Lot 68: becomes the second highest-priced lot ever sold at the Tattersalls October Book 1 Sale, the filly by Frankel and the second foal out of Aljazzi (Shamardal) making for 4,400,000gns.
Once the bidding topped the the two million guineas mark, it turned into a match between Mitsu Nakauchida, who was standing in the bidders' area by the rostrum and on the telephone, and bloodstock agent Alex Elliott who was with owner Kia Joorabchian in the bidders' area by the window.
It was the latter who stayed strong with the Elliott-Kia huddle confidently bidding the 4,400,000gns leaving Nakauchida just shaking his head.
Once Elliott had taken a breath, he said: "Phew! Kia and partners wanted the filly very badly – a Frankel filly from that family and with that physical, she was always going to be a collectors' item. It is a deep price tag and, though we had discussed her at length, obviously I did not see her making that – but we had very much honed in on her.
"But she is part of Team Amo now... wow! She is a spectacular filly, it is a spectacular price, a spectacular bunch of horses here. I'd like to say I was a cool customer when all that was taking place, but that would be a fib – I have never been in that rarified atmosphere before."
He added: "We have seen Ylang Ylang from the same farm and from the same cross, we just need history to repeat itself! The figure I had in mind was a good bit below that, but, as I keep saying to people, good horses will pay you back, now she has got a lot of paying back to do!
"It is great that she is staying here, it is great for British racing that these people are around to buy these horses as we all understand how difficult the product is to promote at the minute. To have two men to say they are going to keep her here, it is huge kudos to them. Kia knows you have got to buy them at the top level to compete at the top level."
Elliott continued: "All the teams select the best horse and it is who blinks first, and fair play to Kia he certainly did not blink, I think I did!
He concluded: "This filly has got through most of the hoops – she is by the right stallion, she is out of a good Shamardal mare, she is from a great farm, she has come to a sale, she has shown she is in the top echelon of horses, now she has got to keep going!"
Her dam Aljazzi was sold to Newsells Park Stud at the Autumn Horses In Training Sale 2018 for a record-breaking price of 1,000,000gns. She was sold by Marco Botti's Prestige Place Stables having been owned in training by breeders Saleh Al Homaizi and Imad Al Sagar.
She had won the Group 2 Duke Of Cambridge Stakes and was fourth-placed in the Prix Rothschild (G1).
Her great grand-dam Majestic Sakeena was bought by Tony Nerses at the Tattersalls December Mares Sale in 2006 for 200,000gns.
Consignor Julian Dollar of Newsells Park Stud said: "To be honest with you, I was hoping she would make a million and that would have been nice, but obviously some good players had her valued at twice that. We are obviously delighted.
"Mitsu [underbidder] is a great trainer and a lovely guy and he loved her, and obviously Kia, Amo and Alex loved her too... it is unbelievable .
"I said to Graham [Smith-Bernal] that there were two fillies that I'd like to keep, she was one and the other was the Dubawi filly. We also have a nice filly to sell on Thursday, the half-sister to Ylang Ylang.
"But I I always loved this filly and thought she was outstanding. I am thrilled with that price, it makes a big difference to a commercial operation like Newsells. It is great."
Of buying Aljazzi for that record price in 2018 he said: "We'd had a good yearling sale, and I went out and spent most of it at the Autumn Horses In Training Sale. She was a fish out of water at that sale and I said to Andreas Jacobs [former owner of Newsells Park Stud] that it might be an opportunity to buy a nice filly at a lower price than she would make at the December Sale. We were happy at the million, I know it sounds crazy but I think we thought we had a chance at that price.
"Her first foal by Galileo was very nice but sadly had a few problems and did not race – she is in-foal to Wootton Bassett. Aljazzi had a couple of barren years, then this filly. She has a nice Frankel colt to follow and she is in-foal to Too Darn Hot."
In 2018, prior to buying Aljazzi, the "good sale" referenced to by Dollar saw Newsells the leading consignor at October Book 1 Sale with aggregate sales of over 11 million guineas, the farm selling the Galileo colt out of Shastye for 3,400,000gns to MV Magnier. The colt was subsequently named Mogul and went on to win the Group 1 Hong Kong Vase and the Group 1 Grand Prix de Paris. (14:57)
Lot 64: McCrackens Farms, regular consignors at Tattersalls but making its Book 1 debut, is well rewarded with its best-ever price here selling this daughter of Sir Mark's Basilica for 250,000gns.
The filly is a half-sister to the champion Australian stayer and international Group 1 winner Best Solution and El Bodegon, winner of the Criterium de Saint-Cloud (G1). Both were bred by the farm out of Al Andalyya (Kingmambo), a first Flat mare bought by the County Down-based farm by Cecil McCracken for 10,500gns at the 2012 Tattersalls February Sale.
"The mare is part of the family now!" laughed Craig McCracken. "She had a filly foal by Ghaiyyath this spring."
Of this St Mark's Basilica, he said: "She was very received. We think she is a racehorse let's hope she is." (13:57)
Lot 53: Amo Racing Ltd steps in at 750,000gns to buy the Sea The Stars colt offered by Lynn Lodge Stud, consigning on behalf of Giggingston House Stud.
The February-born colt is the second foal out of the Muhaarar mare Zahratty, who is a half-sister to the Criterium de Saint-Cloud (G1) winner Dubai Mile and the Listed winner and Group 3-placed Naadirr, they are out of the Pretty Polly Stakes (G1) runner-up Beach Bunny.
Zahratty was purchased by Mags O'Toole for €350,000 in 2021. She has a Night Of Thunder filly foal and was covered by Night Of Thunder this spring. (13:40)
After 50 lots through the ring, the median for the session so far is 295,000gns, up +44 per cent on last year's Day 1 final figure, while the average running at 32 per cent over 2023 at 326,750gns. The clearance rate is 87 per cent. (13:28)
Lot 49: the Frankel filly out of the two-time Group 1 winner Wonderful Tonight (Le Havre), and sold by breeder Stratford Place Stud, is bought by Yulong, via an online bid, for 750,000gns.
The figures matches the previous best price achieved by Stratford Place in the Tattersalls sale ring. (13:20)
Lot 39: bloodstock agent Richard Knight, acting for Salhia Stud, spends 925,000gns on the Dubawi filly out of the Prix de Mallerret (G2) winner Waldied, sold by Newsells Park Stud and bred by Newsells Park Stud & Lordship Stud.
"She is a filly I absolutely adored when I saw her and Newsells has a fantastic draft of horses, they have been so well prepared," said Knight. "She is a Dubawi filly from the family of Waldgeist, and is just a beautiful physical, a lovely strong filly. We are looking to build a racing band whom we will breed from at the end of the day, and she looks like the type of broodmare we will love to have. We are all delighted to get her – I don't know who will train her yet, we will make that decision at a later date."
Salhia Stud has its first runners in Britain this year and Knight reports that the stud currently has ten in training, ten fillies and two colts, and has had three winners so far. Trainers on the list at present with William Haggas, Roger Varian, William Knight and Kevin Philippart de Foy.
"We are pleased with the race course results so far, many of them to have run are types really bought to come to themselves next year," said Knight, adding: "We ill be looking to develop a breeding operation in Britain." (13:01)
Lot 36: the Dark Angel colt out of the Park Hill Stakes (G2) runner-up Vivonn from Cheveley Park Stud is bought by Peter Harris through Stroud Coleman for 420,000gns.
"He is by a great sire, from a proper farm and he looks like a racehorse," said Harris, who bought the Jane Chapple-Hyam-trained Group 1 July Cup winner Mill Stream here in the 2021 Book 2 sale ring for 350,000gns. Harris added of this colt: "He will go into training with Jane."
Mill Stream, a four-year-old by Gleneagles, is entered in this month's British Champions Sprint Stakes (G1) and Harris updated: "We are planning to go to Ascot and all is on track!"
It is the further family of Playful Act, the colt's third dam and a champion two-year-old filly in 2024. (12:47)
Lot 18: becomes the most expensive yearling sold so far in the Tattersalls sale ring, and the fourth-most expensive yearling sold to date, by the French-based Aga Khan Studs-based sire Zarak, sire of this year's Poule d'Essai des Poulains (G1) winner Metropolitan and the Prix Ganay (G1) star Haya Zark.
This chestnut colt was consigned by Barton Stud for breeder Brightwalton Stud and fetched 230,000gns bought by Hurworth Bloodstock.
He is a half-brother to the Listed winner and Group 3-placed Lady Day, and to the Group 3-placed Maximus.
Brightwalton, of course, had the most amazing weekend with Makarova's Group1 Prix de l'Abbaye victory at ParisLongchamp on Sunday, the last racecourse start for the homebred Acclamation filly.
She is out of the Sea The Stars mare Vesnina, the two-year-old winner bought from Cheveley Park Stud at the Tattersalls July Sale 2015 by StroudColeman Bloodstock for Brightwalton for 68,000gns. (12:14)
Lot 8: the No Nay Never colt from Lynn Lodge Stud, bred by Gigginstown House Stud, makes 625,000gns, and is a first early strike by MV Magnier. The colt is the first foal out of the Zoffany mare Thar She Blows, an own-sister to Prosperous Voyage, winner of the Falmouth Stakes (G1). (11:28)
Lot 6: the fabulous Charyn (Dark Angel), this year's dual Group 1 winner and Group 1 runner-up (twice), was bought by Sumbe at the October Book 2 Sale in 2021 for 250,000gns, and Nurlan Bizakov's farm will be hoping lightning will strike again, the team spending 400,000gns on this Blue Point colt from Kilminfoyle House Stud.
The Awbeg Stud-bred half-brother to Tomiko (Footstepsinthesand), winner of the Premio Oaks d'Italia (G2), was pinhooked last year by JC Bloodstock for €85,000.
Charyn's sister is due through the ring tomorrow as Lot 183, offered by Grangemore Stud. (11:21)
Lot 4: Quirke Bloodstock / RP Racing go to 300,000gns for the Newsells Park Stud Ltd-offered colt by Siyouni out of the Poule d'Essai des Pouliches (G1) winner Teppal (Camacho), bred by Al Shahania Stud.
Conor Quirke and RP Racing have had great success from the Tattersalls Sale ring – at the Tattersalls 2023 December Yearling Sale the team went to 175,000gns to buy a Mohaather colt. He was subsequently named Big Mojo and has gone on to win this year's Molecomb Stakes (G2) and finish second in the Flying Childers Stakes (G2). (11:20)
Lot 3: one of the cheapest pinhooks of today gets a sale ring result, the daughter of Ifraaj, bought as a yearling at Tattersalls December for 22,000gns by KS Bloodstock, is returned to market otday and makes 105,000gns. She is bought by Federico Barberini.
The filly was bred by The Pocock Family. (11:13)
Lot 1: it is a packed sale ring to welcome out first lot in the ring, the son of Sea The Stars from Rathbarry Stud.
And we get off to a flyer... the colt, who is the second foal out of the Cheveley Park Stakes (G1) fourth-placed mare Tango (No Nay Never), is bought by Yulong for 500,000gns. It is a fine pinhook result for Abbeylands, who paid 330,000gns, for him as a foal at Tattersalls December last year, the most expensive foal purchase offered today. (11:02)
Good morning and welcome to the start of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale.
Selling starts for today's first day of the Book 1 catalogue at 11am. Follow all the action here on sales day live. (08:02)
Tattersalls September Sale
Chairman's statement ‎ ‎
At the conclusion of the 2024 Tattersalls Somerville Yearling Sale, Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony commented:
“This is the fifth edition of a sale that was introduced in 2020 as a response to the COVID-related delay to the Flat season and numerically the smallest, and whilst we may have been short of obvious stars, there has been solid trade throughout the day from both domestic buyers and those from further afield. International buyers always play a significant part at Tattersalls horses in training sales, particularly those from the Gulf, but there has also been a vibrant domestic market including plenty of interest from the National Hunt community.
“We now look forward to Books 1 to 4 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale, whose graduates have enjoyed spectacular global success in recent months and we look forward to welcoming an international cast of buyers to Park Paddocks during the fortnight that begins with Europe’s Premier Yearling Sale.” (17:00)

Dolan has also bought Alzahir (Lot 199), a two-time-winning chestnut gelding by Sea The Stars and a half-brother to the Grade 1 winner Suedois, the top lot Debora's Dream (Lot 134) and Lot 136, Nazron, who is also by Dark Angel.
The quartet will be trained by a mix of Ivan Furtado, Grant Tuer and Jennie Candlish. (15:59)
Lot 172: Peter Harper buys Rocking Tree for Sheikh Abdullah Salman Alsabah and the horse will be going to Saudi Arabia.
"He is a very strong horse, ideal for Saudi, he vetted clean and well, and he fitted the bill for the order," said Harper after spending 60,000gns on the Kodiac three-year-old, a winner last time out over a mile at Kempton on August 21.
Consigned by The Castlebridge Consignment, the gelding is a three-time winner and rated 92. He has been owned by Teme Valley Racing and trained by George Boughey. (15:16)
Lot 169 "He is a very consistent horse, his trainer has done very well with him and he is verging on a Saturday horse," said trainer Robert Cowell after spending 60,000gns on Tourist.
"There is the option to drop him down in trip, he has a lot of speed and he has been bought for a friend in the yard. We will be put the horse away now and we will aim for some big races next year."
Tourist has run 14 times, won twice and finished second or third eight times, picking up over £33,800 in prize-money. He has been trained this spring and summer by Hilal Kobeissi for Nibras Racing and won last time on August 24, that victory coming over 6f at Windsor and off a BHA rating of 78. (15:00)
Lot 139: Nayef Ibn Ghayam / Adam Burton Bloodstock spend 52,000gns on Remoji, a three-year-old filly by Belardo, sold by Baroda Stud for Roger Varian.
The filly has run four times and is a two-time winner over an extended 7f and a mile, both wins coming on good to firm ground, first at Beverley and then Haydock.
"She goes to Saudi Arabia, she obviously won on her last start, we think she will be an ideal type for the Middle East, she goes on any surface and I think she will really enjoy the racing in the Middle East," said Burton. "She is unexposed and the fillies' programme in the region will suit her. I think we were willing to pay a little more, and I think she was a snip at that price."
Many readers won't be familiar with the Burton's name and that is with good reason – although he has bought at Tattersalls before, Burton is only 20 years of age.
He explained his early start to his career as a bloodstock agent.
"It is a new venture for me, I have been based with a couple of good people and was with trainer Adrian Keatley for a while, he taught me a lot and has been a really good mentor for me. I now do a lot of form work for Roger Fell and I have a few clients out in the Middle East, just building the portfolio and trying to get into things at a young age."
He added: "I met some contacts here at this sale last year, a trainer based in Kuwait, and I met a lot of contacts, his friends and family, through him. At that point, I had bought some horses for Roger and then met them at the same time, so all has come together and, touch wood, long may it continue."
Burton has also done some yearling shopping for Fell this autumn and says that he is "happy to buy any horse that the client is wanting, and I am open for business!"
The young man is looking forward to buying horses at the Tattersalls October Horses In Training Sale and finishes off with his sales pitch.
"That is my Derby, and I am looking forward to it," he said, continuing: "It is a big sale – plenty of horses, plenty of quality, and I will be here to buy for different people."
Burton Bloodstock and Nayef Ibn Ghayam also bought Natchitoches (Lot 129), a colt by Sioux Nation and a winner of two races in France. (14:59)
Lot 134: this summer's two-time winner Debora's Dream (Sioux Nation) is bought by Alan O'Keeffe, assistant to trainer Jennie Candlish.
O'Keeffe signed on behalf of Clare Dolan at 80,000gns, the three-year-old colt, BHA rated 88, consigned by Baroda Stud on behalf of trainer Roger Varian and Opulence Thoroughbreds.
"He looks like he will be a nice horse for next year, his profile looks progressive, he has been bought for an owner and we are hoping he will be lucky," said O'Keeffe. "He has won on the Turf and the All-Weather and we think he can go on. He has come from a good yard, Roger's horses tend to keep progressing.
"It was a tad more than we had thought we'd need to spend, but when they have this sort of rating you have to go somewhere in that region." (14:24)
Lot 122: "Olly Murphy is not here and asked me to take a look over this horse," reported Darren O'Dwyer after bidding for Starshine Legend, a half-brother to Home Of The Brave, on Murphy's behalf, the pair outbidding Anthony Bromley at 45,000gns.
O'Dwyer added: "He has shown form on soft and looks a type to go jumping. All the right National Hunt buyers were on him, too."
By Sea The Stars, the three-year-old gelding is the winner of one and has been in training with James Ferguson. (14:09)
Lot 69: the chestnut gelding Risen Again (No Nay Never) and out of the Listed winner Easter Lily (Galileo) is bought by Alice Haynes Racing for 22,000gns.
Rated 71, the three-year-old has yet to win but has been placed four times from six starts for owner breeder China Horse Club International Ltd. (13:15)

The two-year-old filly is out of Emirates Rewards (Dubawi), a half-sister to the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf winner Outstrip, who was also third in the Dewhurst Stakes (G1). She has a yearling filly by Ardad and a filly foal by Frankel.
Second dam is Asi Siempre, winner of the Spinster Stakes (G1). (12:35)
Lot 71: the 87-rated God Of Fire, who has won three times this summer for Kubler Racing over 1m2f and 1m3f, is bought by Chris Dixon on behalf of Jonjo O'Neill Racing, Dixon signing the docket as O'Neill Racing / Dixon Bloodstock.
"Jonjo rang and asked to to give him a shout when we were doing doing the catalogue if we saw anything that could do a job hurdling, so we put this horse forward," explained Dixon. "He has obviously progressed nicely since Dan and Clare have had him on the Flat, he has got a winning hurdler in his pedigree, the only one who has tried it.
"Muhaarar has had a few good jumpers over the last year or so and he might be one of those who make a bit of an impact as a jumps stallion with the right type of horse; I do think he is a good and underrated stallion."
Dixon added: "He looks like the type of horse, he is not old, who could do well in novice hurdles and then go handicapping. Jonjo also did say that they are keen to have an odd horse who could run back on the Flat and this horse has got a high-enough Flat rating to get in some nice races." (12:21)
Lot 48: the two-time winner Liv My Life (Awtaad), a granddaughter of the three-time Group 1-placed Mona Lisa (Giant's Causeway-Colorsnap), who finished second in the Prix de l'Opera (G1) , is bought by Stuart Williams for 6,000gns.
Liv My Life is a half-sister to the Listed Chesham Stakes-placed Pentle Bay (New Bay), who was bought for £400,000 in June by Richard Ryan and C Maneer Bloodstock, and to the three-time winner Sweet Betsy (Lawman).
Dam My Wish (Galileo) has a yearling by Supremacy, who is catalogued in October Book 1, and a colt foal by Naval Crown.
The three-year-old filly's last success came at Goodwood last September when successful in a 6f nursery off a mark of 74, her previous highest-winning rating being 76. (11:46)
Lot 41: the four-year-old filly Evening Story (New Bay) is bought by Muhammad M Owaimar for 21,000gns.
She has won since the catalogue was published – successful at Newcastle on September 3 over 1m2f and off a BHA mark of 74 for trainer Grant Tuer. It is her highest winning mark for the four-time winner.
She is out of the Danehill Dancer mare Penny Rose and is a half-sister to the Hoppings Stakes (G3) fourth-placed Sweet Promise and a grand-daughter of the Group 3 winner Love Everlasting.
It is the further family of two-time Derby winner Shirley Heights and the two-time European champion filly Divine Proportions. (11:23)
Lot 8: named since the catalogue was published, and raced when second on debut in a two-year-old maiden at Brighton on September 2 for trainer Dominic Ffrench-Davies, Martin The Saxon is bought by Valfredo Valiani for 32,000gns from Edwards Pre-Training.
The Saxon Warrior colt, who is out of the three-year-old winner Black Martini (Street Sense), a daughter of the US Listed-placed Christina D'Oro, was bought as a yearling by Edwards Pre Training for €6,000 last autumn. (10:26)

Tattersalls Somerville Yearling Sale
Chairman's statement
At the conclusion of the 2024 Tattersalls Somerville Yearling Sale, Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony commented
“The Tattersalls Somerville Yearling Sale has made huge progress in its four-year history with the inaugural one-day sale in 2021 producing turnover below five million guineas and an average price of 21,000 guineas. This year’s renewal, while falling short of last year’s across-the-board records, is still a long way in advance of the 2021 levels and is a clear indication of a sale which has quickly established itself as an important fixture in the European yearling sales calendar.
“Nevertheless, the demand for places and the conscious decision to reduce overall numbers in the two weeks of the forthcoming Tattersalls October Yearling Sale, has resulted in a two-day Somerville Yearling Sale for the first time and a very significant increase in numbers, all of which has contributed to a clearance rate which has fallen some way short of where we would like it to be.
"Certain sectors of the market have held up well, with a wide-margin record number of lots selling for 50,000 guineas or more, but the evident softening of the market at the lower levels, which has been a consistent theme this year, also reflects prevailing economic realities which we are all aware of.
“As with every sale at Tattersalls we will assess all the factors at play with a view to establishing the optimum format for the Somerville Yearling Sale going forward and, in the meantime, we look forward to Books 1 to 4 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale and to seeing Somerville yearlings continue to excel on the racecourse where it matters most.” (23:13)

Lot 419: becomes the sale top lot – the daughter of Havana Grey selling to Alex Elliott for 140,000gns, the agent standing in the gate way and, after a match duel once the figures reached the higher echelons, he outbid rival Jono Mills, who was standing at the top of the stairs above the bidders' area.
It is the second year in succession that a Havana Grey filly from Whitsbury Manor Stud has topped the Somerville Sale, last year's top lot being out of Harbour Watch mare Minoria.
It is a seventh lot bought by Elliott at this two-day sale and he said: "She was the stand-out filly for me over the two days, she could have been offered later in Book 2, but Ed [Harper] does an outstanding job and brought her here to stand out.
"I love the pedigree and I bought a horse called Study Up under the second dam in Book 3, 2022. He is with Clive Cox and he won his three-year-old maiden on his career debut – it is a pedigree that never misses.
"She is quite young so there is a lot of improvement to come to her, and she has a bit of length to her. She just has loads of quality and I loved her when I first saw her. I thought she was the one to get and, luckily, Kia [Joorabchian] thought the same."
Of her price, he said: "We had to take breeze up men out for a long way, her sister sold well at this year's Craven Sale when bought by William Muir, and after seeing what Havana Grey has brought at the breeze up sales this year I knew the breeze up men would be on her to a level; it was nice to buy for an end user."
He added: "The quality horses at a sale such as this shine through. It is not a select sale, and there are a few horses who could have been in different books, but people have brought them here to stand out and I think generally have been well rewarded for doing so."
This filly's dam Step Sister (Twilight Son) is a half-sister to the admirable Stepper Point, who won ten races, including the Sapphire Stakes (G2), the Flying Five Stakes (G3), the Hever Sprint Stakes (L), the Beverley Bullet Sprint (L) and the Criterium de Vitesse (L). He was also placed 17 times, the best result being Group 1 placings in the King's Stand Stakes and the Nunthorpe Stakes. (17:23)
Lot 418: another first-crop sire catches the buyers' eyes, the colt by Space Blues eventually bought for Newmarket-based trainer Michael Bell by son Nick Bell, who signing for the purchase at 85,000gns.
Sold by Clearwater Stud, the February-born colt is out of the three-year-old winner Stay Forever (Harbour Watch) and from the family of of the King Edward VII Stakes winner Plea Bargain.
It is the top-class family of Time Charter, the champion older mare of 1983, ancestress of the champion two-year-old Best Terms, the Group 1-placed Time Away, the Group 1winner Cursory Glance and the Grade 1 winner Digital Age.
"I am a big fan of Space Blues, I think this horse is very athletic and he goes back to a really top class family," said Bell Snr. "Space Blues was a very tough and consistent horse, and as he was a speedy son of Dubawi he has every chance of making it. He looks very uncomplicated.
"I am hoping he is for an existing client but I need to make a couple of calls!" (17:04)
Lot 404: Richard Ryan bought the Day 1 top lot by first-crop sire by Starman and the buyer supports another new stallion here, this time going to 50,000gns for the Supremacy filly from Yeomanstown Stud.
She is the second-highest priced by the sire sold over the two days and the highest-priced filly. (16:54)
Lot 385: Rabbah Bloodstock buys the Acclamation filly out of She Believes (Arcano), a half-sister to the Group 1 winner Anmaat, and to the Grade 3 winner Syntax, for 55,000gns from Rathbarry Stud.
The page boasts a lovely recent update courtesy of Anmaat (Awtaad), who won the Rose of Lancaster Stakes (G3) at Haydock in August his first racecourse start since his Prix d'Ispahan (G1) success in May 2023.
He holds entries in the Royal Bahrain Irish Champion Stakes (G1) in September and the Group 1 Ascot Qipco Champion Stakes (British Champions Middle Distance) in October. (16:23)
Lot 376: "He has been bought for Amo Racing," said Alex Elliott after going to 90,000gns for the colt by Sergei Prokofiev and out of Sassy Dresser (Kingman).
"They have obviously had great success with Arizona Blaze, who is from the first-crop of Sergei, and he is out of a Kingman mare. She has bred a Zoustar rated 96, the winner of two races as a two-year-old this year [Regal Gem].
"Matt Coleman was the underbidder and he said to me that the colt could have been at Book 1 horse, and physically I don't disagree, he is a very good model."
Elliott added: "It is a deep family – you have the current horses The Platinum Queen (Group 1 Prix de l'Abbaye winner as a juvenile) and Seagulls Eleven, runner-up in this year's Superlative Stakes (G2), under the third dam. This colt was liked by the whole team and Kia [Joorabchian] saw him yesterday with myself." (15:15)
Lot 362: the Mohaather half-sister to the Marygate Stakes (L) winner Betty Clover (Time Test), who was bred by, and is owned by and trained by Eve Johnson Houghton, makes 70,000gns, bought by Oliver St Lawrence.
This colt was also bred by Johnson Houghton out of the unraced mare Reprieval (Kendargent), but was owned until today by her mother Gaie.
"I tried to sell him as a foal and couldn't, Mum needed a colt foal to run with her colt so she bought him off me," reported Johnson Houghton, adding: "I thought he'd make 50,000gns, and he made 70,000gns so I am thrilled – he is just a real stocky horse."
Mohaather, of course, was also bred by Gaie Johnson Houghton and the son of Showcasing has been enjoying an excellent first-season with runners, the highlight, of course, being the Molecomb Stakes (G3) win by Big Mojo, a Tattersalls December Sale graduate.
She said: "I have one backward Mohaather, I tried to buy them but could not get near them. It has been great to see his progress this year."
Of breeding and racing Betty Clover, she smiled: "I never realised how much it would mean until she won her first race, and then I burst into tears and embarrassed myself. Then, when she won at York, I was at Newbury and the whole of the course knew as I was screaming her home, it was really embarrassing, too.
"But Betty has got better and better, she's done so well, she is so tough and runs this week in the Listed Dick Poole at Salisbury."
Of the mare's current status, Eve said: "Reprieval has got a lovely Kameko colt and is in-foal to Soldier's Call. I trained her and she did not get to a racecourse, so I ended up with her and literally bred her by mistake!" (15:02)
Lot 340: Henry Lascelles /Rogues Gallery Racing got to 52,000gns for the Oaks Farm Stables-sold colt by Ardad and out of Powerful Dream (Frozen Power)
The January-born colt is a half-brother to a winner and his dam, the winner of ten races, is a half-sister to Coporal Maddox. He was a winner of 13 races, the best being victory in the Listed Woodcote Stakes (L). He was also placed an amazing 39 times, including in the Vintage Stakes (G3) and thePrix du Bois (G3).
Third dam Proud Lou was a joint champion filly in Canada in 1981 and dam of Houseproud, winner of the Poule d'Essai des Pouliches (G1) and the Prix de la Grotte (G3), and a runner-up in the Prix Marcel Boussac (G1). (14:28)
Lot 344: the Footstepsinthesand half-brother to the talented two-year-old Maria Branwell (James Garfield), winner of the 2022 National Stakes (L) and third in the Queen Mary Stakes (G2) for trainer David O'Meara, makes 68,000gns.
He was sold by breeders Barry Kennedy and Anna Murphy of Rigsdale Stud, the breeders of the colt's four-year older half-sister, and the only lot offered at this year's sale by the stud.
It is a real two-year-old's family with the family tracing back to the capable third dam First Waltz, winner of the Prix Morny (G1) and second in the Cheveley Park Stakes (G1).
The sibling's dam Princess Pearl (Teofilo) has had three winners from three runners. (14:05)
Lot 329: Hugo Palmer is to be the recipient trainer of this filly by Mehmas, bought by Ed Sackville and Manor House Stables for 70,000gns.
Sold by Chasemore Farm, the farm's Andrew Black a one-time investor in the training business at Manor House Stables in Cheshire, the filly is a half-sister to Nashirah (Dubawi), who was a winner at Listed level in Germany,
The filly's second dam is Beauty Bright (Danehill), a Group 3 winner of the Renaissance Stakes (G3), third placed in the Lowther Stakes (G2) and a half-sister to the Racing PostTrophy (G1) runner-up Aloft. (13:54)
Lot 291: Station Yard made a huge impact on its Tattersalls breeze-up debut at this year's Tattersalls Craven Sale, the consignor's top lot was 800,000gns given by Godolphin for a colt by Blue Point, the second-best price at the sale.
The Francesca and Charlie Poste team, alongside Blandford Bloodstock, is reinvesting today and spends 60,000gns on this filly by Havana Grey out of the unraced Fountain Of Youth mare Motsi Ma Boati.
She is a daughter of Golden Nun, winner of the Group 3 Ballyogan Stakes and from a long-standing Bearstone Stud-produced family, consignor of this filly. (13:14)
Lot 279: Kildallan Farm, who had such a good day yesterday when the Dermot Kilmartin's 15-year-old son Ruairi sold his €6,000 pinhooked Dark Angel filly to Paul Corrigan for 70,000gns, successfully returned to the ring today with this colt by Inns Of Court.
The half-brother to the fast filly Believing, who finished second last time out in the Nunthorpe Stakes (G1) having won the Group 2 Sapphire Stakes in July, was sold for 75,000gns, bought by Highflyer / Eve Johnson Houghton / Middleham Park.
The syndicate's man Tom Palin was on hand and in the sales' ring to discuss the purchase.
"I thought he was one of the stand-outs of the sale, he walks for fun and the page is there for all to see as he is a half-brother to a fantastic horse," he said, before quipping: "Seeing is Believing!"
Palin continued: "Obviously we have a big love affair with Inns Of Court with Ziggys Dream and The Strikin Viking – for us the sire can do no wrong. I think this colt is good value, and he could look cheap, and could look expensive, in 12 months' time!"
Of training plans he outlined: "He goes to Eve who can ready horses and is an exceptional trainer. We have one horse with Eve already, but she is a trainer we had on our radar for a long time and we have wanted to get the right horses to her."
Ziggy's Dream finished third last time out for Middleham in the Oak Tree Stakes (G3) and was a Listed winner earlier in the season in France for trainer Alice Haynes, while The Strikin Viking finished second in the Railway Stakes (G2) for Middleham, who subsequently sold the colt to Wathnan Racing, the colt collecting a runner-up spot in the August's Richmond Stakes (G2) at Goodwood. (12:24)
Lot 277: this colt from Houghton Bloodstock and by Cotai Glory makes 100,000gns, bought by Alex Elliott and JS Bloodstock.
He is out of the unraced dam Millvina (Dutch Art), a half-sister to the Temple Stakes (G2) winner Priceless.
"He is for Valmont and Michael Blencowe," reported Elliott. "We set up the partnership last year and we actually run a horse tonight called West Acre, and we think a bit of him and is a hose we like.
"This horse was George Scott's pick of the day. We are delighted to get him, he has a very fast pedigree and comes from a very good farm. He looks like a type of horse we can really get on with.
"Dutch Art is a broodmare sire I like, and Cotai Glory consistently punches above his weight and this is a very exciting horse."
Explaining the strategy a little further, Elliott said: "We will aim to buy six together and two will go to George Scott, two to Andrew Balding and two to Ralph Beckett.
"For George we have focused on getting some fast type of two-year-old sorts, he has excelled with that sort of horse, while for Andrew and Ralph we will probably get later-developing types." (12:02)
