Back in the swing of things, selling underway for our Day 2 evening session. (17:07)
Lot 1768: Maurice Burns of Rathasker Stud, ever the commercial stallion man, did not waste the deserved opportunity of some promo for his stallion Coulsty after selling this colt by the sire for 48,000gns to Ollie Pears / CCR.
"We had three by him catalogued in Book 3 – a filly made 60,000gns [Lot 1578] yesterday, this colt fetched 48,000gns, and another filly made 45,000gns [Lot 1675].," he said. "We are delighted with the way the stallion has been received. He has already proven he is a Group 1 stallion and people are remembering that and coming back.
"He had small crops and now he has big crops, and we hope he is going to go from strength to strength. They have good physicals, good minds and good bone; we delighted with the way they are selling."
Of this pedigree he recalled: "We bought the Diamonaka a long time ago and we kept a couple of daughters out of her and this mare Syamantaka (Clodovil) has now produced Grays Inn, who was fourth in Silken Glider Stakes (G3) the other day. The mare has proven she can get a good horse. She has full-sister at foot and is back in-foal to Coulsty."
Of trade he added: "We have sold everything we have brought here over the past two weeks and have just one left to go tonight [Lot 1807]. We have a good loyal band of trainers who like to buy our stock and we are very thankful to them."
Over the two weeks of the October Yearling Sale 2023 Rathasker has sold 13 lots for a turnover of 581,000gns and an average price of 44,692gns. (12:31)
Lot 1739: Middleham Park Racing is still at Tattersalls in force and the team goes to 42,000gns for this son of Australia, a half-brother to the Vintage Stakes (G3) third-placed Room Key. The colt was consigned by Baroda Stud.
Tim Palin of Middleham Park was given speaking duties after purchase and he said: "He is lovely colt, the stallion gets results, the mare has produced three very talented horses, he is probably as nice a horse we have seen in this session. We were deliberating and we went a bit more than we had planned. We have no trainer in mind as yet, we will have a chat and work out a plan."
When explaining the attraction of this colt, who has a bit more of a stamina influence in his pedigree, for Middleham Park, which is perhaps better known for speedy horses, Palin said: "We are mixing it up a bit, and buying a few horses with more middle-distance profiles as they have good residual value – if he gets to rating of 85 or 95, he could be worth a bit further down the line.
"He will probably go to a Newmarket trainer who will bring him along nice and steadily – probably give him a few handful of runs at two and train him essentially with a three-year-old career in mind."
He added: "We will be back for the sessions tonight and tomorrow looking for a few hidden diamonds." (12:03)
Lot 1738: from Lodge Park Stud and by Profitable, this filly goes to Richard Knight for 45,000gns.
She is out of Satin Kiss (Seeking The Gold), the Listed-placed own-sister to the Middle Park Stakes (G1) winner Lujain, the pair out of the Shadeed mare Satin Flower, winner of the Jersey Stakes (G3) and a runner-up in the Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup Stakes (G1).
Richard Knight said: "She is a nice filly by Profitable and from Lodge Park – we bought Signora Cabello in Book 3 from the farm a few years ago. She won the Queen Mary – let's see if lightning can strike twice! She is also for John Quinn and has been bought on spec.
"Damien [Burns] really liked her and I have stayed to see her go through."
Lodge Park has sold 10 yearlings over the past two weeks for an average price of 179,750gns and a top price of 750,000gns. (11:50)
Lot 1733: Najd Stud buys a 15th yearling at the 2023 October Yearling Sale, three purchased so far in Book 3, when going to 90,000gns for this Pinatubo colt, bred by Rabbah and sold by Barton Stud.
There was plenty of interest in this colt from end users and breeze-up consignors, but Najad was successful with Johnny Collins the underbidder.
Consignor Tom Blain of Barton Stud said: "This colt was raised on the farm. The sire is going well, and they seem to improve a lot from foal to yearlings. I am delighted Najd Stud has bought him. We have six or seven left, sold almost everything." (11:40)
Lot 1706: the Holy Roman Emperor colt, the first foal out of Princess Lahar (Australia), bought by Rathasker Stud at the Tattersalls December Sale 2021 for 42,000gns, sells today for 28,000gns to Enrica Baragiola Sagam SRL.
The dam is a daughter of Lady Lahar (Fraam), a Group 3 winner and stakes-placed three times. She is dam of Jallota (Rock Of Gibraltar), winner of the Prix du Pin (G3), a Group 1 runner-up in the Premio Vittorio di Capua (G1) and multiple group race placed, the Listed winner Classic Legend (Galileo) and the Group 2 and Group 1-placed Rawdaa (Teofilo). (10:37)
A reminder to all regarding today's sale... selling today is split into two sessions.
We start selling tis morning at 9.30am, and there is a break for racing after Lot 1800.
We recommence selling for this evening's session at 5pm. (08:35)

5. Lot 1491: Hello Youmzain / Bibury >> B.C. >> Mount Coote Stud >> JC Bloodstock >> 72,000gns (21:40)
Lot 1662: the top lot for today's first Book 3 session has come late in the day – this colt by Too Darn Hot is bought by Ted Durcan for Richard Hughes at 130,000gns. Hazelwood Bloodstock was the consignor.
"Richard and team had seen the horse this afternoon, as I had, we all loved him – he is a smashing big horse and the sire is red hot," said Durcan. "I know the family extremely well from my time in the Middle East, which helped – Mike De Kock and Sheikh Khalifa had the whole family.
"Richard was adamant that we were not to leave the sale without him, we spent plenty on him but he was a horse that Richard really wanted. I respect Adrian O'Brien, he is a great producer and has a marvellous nursery, he was adamant that this is a horse we should have.
"We are over the moon to have this horse and there is no owner for the horse as yet."
The colt is a first foal out of the winner Moohareeba (Invincible Spirit), a daughter of Mahbooba, a champion juvenile filly in South Africa and winner of the Golden Slipper (G1). She is dam of two black-type winners in the UK – Mootasadir amd Dubai Warrior. (21:01)
Lot 1644: the Q-Cross Stables-consigned filly by Invincible Spirit makes 115,000gns, bought by Olivia Mackey on behalf of trainer Joseph O'Brien and Justin Casse.
The filly was pinhooked as a foal for €23,000 by today's consignor Luke Coen of Q-Cross Stables.
"It is a brilliant result," said Coen. "A couple of months ago when I knew she was coming here, I called her 'the queen of Book 3'. It was a bold statement to make, but she definitely is the queen now!
"She was a €23,000 purchase and I came out from buying her and I could not believe that I had. I usually get beaten in the ring, but this time it worked out. As horses go, you could not dream of a much better run. For a May foal to be as mature in the mind as she is, it is something to recommend her and she made my job look very easy today.
Coen, still emotional after the successful sale, said: "It is a bit breathtaking, my family is very horsey but I do this on my own and when you get a touch like this.... I have been doing this under my own banner for two years, but I have had a few there with Francis Quinn, who has helped me an awful long way, and Anthony Ryan at home – two very good local fellas. Without them I probably wouldn't be here."
Mackey was also clearly a little emotional after the bidding had concluded and laughed: "I get so nervous!"
She had been left in charge of proceedings at Tattersalls, and outlined: "I saw her this morning and loved her, and sent her details on to Joseph and he loved her too.
"She walks out there, she has a beautiful walk. There is nothing to knock about her, she is a May foal so there is plenty of room for improvement. The consignor has done a great job. I had no idea what she'd go for – I spotted the athlete and sent on the details."
The filly is out of the Galileo mare Mardie Gras, who was unraced but is dam of two winners from two runners. She is out of the dual Group 1-placed Acatenango mare Midnight Angel, dam of the Listed-placed Midnight Game. The family stretches under the third dam to the multiple Group 1 winner in Japan Eishin Flash.
Mardie Gras has a colt foal by Blue Bresil and was covered by Crystal Ocean. (20:17)
Lot 1641: Bred by Rabbah Bloodstock, and sold by Houghton Bloodstock, Avenue Bloodstock for trainer Paddy Twomey go to 70,000gns for this son of Invincible Spirit.
He is a February first foal out of Magical Journey (Night Of Thunder), a winner at two and placed in the Bosra Sham Fillies Stakes (L), the Flying Fillies' Stakes (L), the Boadicea Stakes (L) and the Arran Sprint Stakes (L).
Second dam Aljaazya was unraced but she is a daughter of Matiya, winner of the Irish 1,000 Guineas (G1) and three-time Group 1-placed in the 1,000 Guineas, the Fillies' Mile and the Prix de Diane. (20:00)
Lot 1608: James Ferguson Racing and Kind Bloodstock spend 55,000gns on the filly by Mohaather and out of the two-time winner Listed-placed Jufoon, sold by Jamie Railton.
She is half-sister to two multiple winners – Sayl (Iffraaj), who has won eight races in Australia and has been placed 18 times, and Talabaat (Shalaa), the winner of three races in France.
The second dam Symba's Dream was also Listed placed, and is a half-sister to the two-time Grade 1 winner, 16-time winner and multiple graded race performer, Heritage Of Gold. (19:36)
Lot 1612: Kevin Philippart de Foy as underbidder on the earlier Tom Goff purchased daughter of Make Believe (Lot 1444), and the young Newmarket-based trainer gets the bidding his way when purchasing this daughter of the popular Too Darn Hot at 45,000gns.
Sold by Mountarmstrong Stud, the filly is out of the three-time winner Karijini (Siyouni) from the Meon Stud Valley family of the champion Stagecraft, a son of the Group 2 Prix de l'Opera winner Bella Colora. (19:21)
Lot 1598: Amanda Skiffington purchased Havana Gold at the 2011 October Book 1 Sale from Crimbourne Stud for 80,000gns, and the son of Teofilo went on to claim Group 1 glory with victory in the Prix Jane Prat.
However, perhaps more significantly he is sire one of the most exciting young stallions currently standing in Europe, Havana Grey.
Sadly, Havana Gold died earlier this year, but he has 14 lots catalogued in Book 3, and Skiffington, alongside Beckhampton Stables, invests 58,000gns in the Redgate Bloodstock-offered colt out of the Listed winner Indignant (Gold Away), who has bred three winners from five foals of racing age. She is a daughter of Moiava, a juvenile champion in France in 1998. (18:34)
Lot 1580: Norman Court Stud is sticking with a family it knows well.... the farm spends 52,000gns on the Showcasing filly out of Greach, sold by Whitsbury Manor Stud.
The filly is a full-sister to Miss Show Off, who is owned by Norman Court and is the winner of one race as a juvenile this year. The filly was bought by the Wiltshire farm for 65,000gns at the Tattersalls Somerville Sale last year, while Whitsbury Stud purchased Greach (Gregorian) as a broodmare prospect here in December 2019, paying 25,000gns for the then three-year-old Italian Listed winner.
Miss Show Off is her only runner so far and she has a filly foal at foot by Havana Grey and was covered this spring by the farm's young sire. (18:06)
Lot 1578: the homebred Coulsty filly from Rathasker Stud is bought by agent Matt Houldsworth of Howson & Houldsworth Bloodstock for trainer George Margarson, the February filly costing the team 60,000gns.
She is out of the Kyllachy filly Grandmas Dream, the dam of four winners from six runners, including Savannah's Dream, who finished second in the Listed Windsor Castle Stakes (L).
Grandmas Dream is a half-sister to Tremar, who won the Prix Eclipse (G3). She was purchased by Rathasker at the December Mares Sale in 2015 from Kirtlington Stud at 25,000gns.
It is the family of the Group 1 runner-up Lady In Waiting and the US Grade 1 winner Lea. (17:58)
Lot 1535: the bay filly by Far Above, one of only two fillies by the sire catalogued in Book 3, makes 65,000gns, bought by Richard Brown of Blandford Bloodstock.
"I was fortunate enough to buy Far Above at the breeze-ups for Sheikh Rashid, I think this filly is lovely, I saw her in the pouring rain this morning, she really stood out for me, there are lots of bits of her father about her. I have bought her for Sheikh Rashid's brother, "said Richard Brown of Blandford Bloodstock.
"Sheikh Rashid has supported the stallion and about three or four foals by him, and the family is excited about the stallion. He was an extremely fast horse and this filly looks very quick too."
The filly was bred by Cooneen Stables out of the Kodiac mare Disko, the dam of two winners, including Corazon, winner of the Prix d'Arenburg (G3). (16:28)
Lot 1519: Tony O'Callaghan of Tally-Ho Stud, wearing his breeze-up consignor's hat, purchases this Earthlight colt for 95,000gns.
“We’ll get him home and see how he performs before we make a plan, but he’ll probably come back here in April,” said O’Callaghan. “We liked him from the word go; sharp, a good walker, nicely balanced. We’ve sold one by Earthlight that went quite well and he’s getting nice stock. They look racy and behave well. This colt is from a good family too and Con Harrington is a good breeder.
Of the market this autumn he said: “If you got it right it’s been very good, if you have a nice horse then you’ll get well paid. You have to have know your horse, value correctly and not live in dreamland.”
Tally-Ho Stud has now finished selling its Tattersalls yearling draft for 2023. Across the Tattersalls Somerville Sale, the Tattersalls Ireland September Sale and the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale, Tally-Ho Stud has sold 70 lots for an average price of 100,143gns. (16:12)
Lot 1491: Michael Fitzpatrick, who sold the Book 2, Day 2 top lot (Lot 1020) through Kilminfoyle House Stud, reinvests as JC Bloodstock when going to 72,000gns for this Hello Youmzain colt from Mount Coote Stud.
“He’s a nice horse who will go breezing. The sire was a very quick, well-bred horse by Kodiac so he must have a chance," said Fitzpatrick.
The March-born colt is out of the Royal Applause mare Bibury, the dam of three winners, including the Group 3 winner Steel Of Madrid, and a half-sister to the Ascot Gold Cup (G1) winner Rite Of Passage.
Bibury was bought at the Tattersalls December Mares Sale in 2003 for 70,000gns. (15:00)
Lot 1474: the Elzaam half-sister to this year's Nunthorpe Stakes (G1) winner Live In The Dream is bought by Chasemore Farm, stud manager Jack Conroy on bidding duties, for 80,000gns. The filly is also half-sister to the Listed placed Live In The Moment.
"She has been bought for a client who boards a few broodmares with us," said Conroy, who signed under the banner JP Bloodstock. "We liked this filly, she has a lot of residual value, and we think Live In The Dream has every chance of going on to win the Breeders' Cup. Hopefully, this filly will be as sharp as her half-brother.
"The mare has done it more than once, and our vet Pat Sells helps with Live In The Dream so knows him well, which is helpful. This filly is late April foal so she should grow and Pat is sure she will develop and get to be bigger than Live In The Dream. At that money she makes sense and has a chance."
Of Chasemore's own October draft so far, he said: "We sold a really nice pinhooked colt half-brother to Pogo in Book 1 for half a million, and one or two made a bit more than we were expecting, but they have all gone to good homes who will do their best by them. We still have four or five more to sell.
The Elzaam filly was sold by Hegarty Bloodstock, co-pinhooked at €27,000 last year by David Hegarty and Sam Hoskins, who said: "I am a terrible vendor, I get very nervous, but I think she is a racehorse for the future, and good luck to the new owners. David has done a wonderful job with her, he has done all the hard work."
Of the decision to purchase her as a foal, he said: "I really liked her as a filly, she is athletic, she has a good mind, and we did think that Live In The Dream might be one of those three-year-olds who would get better this year at four. We were very aware of him, but never thought that he would win a Nunthorpe! At the least, we thought that the mare had had two 100+ rated horses from four winners and four runners – I love that ratio of good horses, she is clearly a very good mare."
Kennet Kennet Valley Thoroughbreds and Hot To Trot Racing, syndicates managed by Hoskins, both had runners in the Nunthorpe and he admits the York Group 1 was a race that gave him mixed emotions.
"I was watching our two who were drawn on the wrong side, and then suddenly my eye went to Live In The Dream, I hadn't really watching him – he was a 33-1 outsider," he said, admitting "it was a bit of a weird one" as he had to temper his enthusiasm after the race win in order to look after his syndicate members whose horses had finished sixth and eighth. (14:51)
Lot 1444: "I went to see her yesterday, and then I went to se her again this morning in the driving rain," reported Tom Goff after spending 65,000gns on the Make Believe half-sister to the recent Del Mar Oaks (G1) winner Anisette, a 2021 Tattersalls Somerville Sale graduate.
He continued: "It is a really good page, a really good pedigree, she is a really good filly, a good mover, then is some improvement in her and we know the family very well.... Sultanina, Dalvina, French Dressing ... and she is a sister to a Group 1 winner in the US. It is arguably one of the best pedigrees in the book."
Of the market over the past two weeks, he said: "In my humble opinion, set against the background of what has happened in the underlying economy over the last two years, and the state of UK prize-money, I think that the market has held up remarkably well. If a nice horse comes in the ring they make very good money."
The filly was sold by WH Bloodstock, bred by the Morera Partnership. (13:14)
Lot 1426: Kilcarn Park sells this filly by Blue Point to Con and Amy Marnane for 66,000gns.
"She looks a fast filly," said Marnane. "We have just been very lucky with Blue Points and we have four yearlings to breeze, a mare in-foal to him and a two-year-old in training, you can say we are big fans! He is a phenomenal stallion, he did it himself and he is doing it himself now."
"We have bought three this week – two by Blue Point and a Starspangledbanner," said Amy Marnane. "I will be here for Book 4, I have bought four from Book 4 and they have all become stakes horses – everyone else has gone home by then. I have the stamina to stay through to the end, I hope the horses don't have as much stamina as I do!"
Consignor Patrick Cosgrove had two catalogued for Book 3, but after withdrawal of a filly by Make Believe bought just the one lot to Newmarket this week.
"We purchased the mare Sun Lily from Keeneland and she is with us on the farm, we have a broodmare band of around ten," he explained. "This filly was bred and owned by my mother and the filly has been lovely all the way through. She has been busy here and a lot of people liked her. We could not get into Blue Point in year one, but we were keen to use him and we are delighted that we did."
Sun Lily, who was a two-year-old winner in the US and is from the family of the champion filly and Irish 1,000 Guineas winner Crimplene, has a foal at foot by Earthlight and was covered this spring by Make Believe. (12:44)
Lot 1393: Peter & Ross Doyle Bloodstock / Thurloe Thoroughbred stayed late at Tattersalls yesterday to buy the penultimate Book 2 lot through the ring (Lot 1350), and the team has started early in Book 3 going to 40,000gns for this colt by Nathaniel, sold by Jamie Railton (Agent).
The colt, who was bred by Beswick Brothers Bloodstock, was initially purchased as a Tattersalls December foal for 20,000gns by RSL.
The colt's dam Sauvalanche (Redoute's Choice) is a daughter of the Prix d'Astarte (G2) winner and Flower Bowl Invitational Stakes (G1) runner-up Turtle Bow. She is a half-sister to Turtle Bowl, winner of the Prix Jean Prat (G1) and multiple Group 1 placed, and to the Group 1 Ascot Gold Cup runner-up Age Of Aquarius. (11:33)
Lot 1363: Mark Grant Racing goes to 47,000gns for the daughter of Kodi Bear, bred and consigned by Rathbarry Stud.
She is a February-born filly out of Piacere (New Approach), who was the dam of two winners from three runners before the catalogue was printed. The mare has subsequently improved that record to three from four in August with victory by her juvenile and Tattersalls Craven Sale graduate Kingdom Of Riches (Acclamation) at the end of August. (10:56)
Lot 1355: Whatton Manor Stud finished Book 2 off with a flourish yesterday and has begun Book 3 in the same form selling this Blue Point filly to breeze up consignor Micky Cleere for 60,000gns.
Bred by Rabbah Bloodstock Limited, the filly is out of the winning, 95-rated Sea The Stars mare Ouja, the dam of one winner from one runner. (09:51)

Day 3
At the conclusion of Book 2 of the 2023 Tattersalls October Yearling Sale, Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony commented: “As referenced last week the 2022 Tattersalls October Yearling Sales reached extraordinary heights the like of which we may not see for many years to come, so for Book 2 of the October Yearling Sale to produce returns which, although falling short of last year, compare favourably with all bar two renewals of Europe’s largest yearling sale gives some perspective.
“As recently as 2016 the turnover at Book 2 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale was below 40 million guineas, with a then record average price of 65,000 guineas, a record-equalling median of 50,000 guineas and an unprecedented 117 lots selling for 100,000 guineas or more.
"This year’s sale has achieved an average in excess of 80,000 guineas, a median second only to last year’s runaway record and a clearance rate of 85%. The outstanding DUBAWI filly who topped the sale at 725,000 guineas was the second highest priced filly ever sold at this sale, 55 lots have sold for 200,000 guineas or more which is fractionally fewer than last year and the diversity of buyers has been notable at all levels of the market.
“As ever the support from the consignors has been outstanding. Year after year horses purchased at Book 2 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale are successful at the very highest level throughout the world, annually demonstrating the extraordinary quality of yearlings that British and Irish consignors, alongside many from mainland Europe, commit to this sale.
"Buyers, both domestic and international, derive huge confidence from the consistent racecourse achievements of Tattersalls October Yearlings and buyers from throughout Europe and the Gulf region, as well as Australia, China, Hong Kong, Japan and the USA have all made valuable contributions this week alongside the domestic British and Irish participants who will always be the backbone of the October Yearling Sales.
"It is a source of pride that Books 1 and 2 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale showcase so many of the best yearlings to be found in Europe, but as we move on to Books 3 and 4 we should also highlight the quality of the yearlings to be offered in the next few days.
"The likes of last year’s Group 1 Cheveley Park Stakes winner LEZOO and recent Group 2 Beresford Stakes winner DEEPONE were both bought at Book 3 of the October Yearling Sale and are graphic illustrations of the opportunities still to be found at Tattersalls this week.” (22:00)

Lot 1309: the third-last yearling colt by Sea The Stars to be offered at the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale 2023 sells for 425,000gns, bought by Richard Brown of Blandford Bloodstock.
Brown, who was standing at the back of the right stairwell, said: "I think a lot of credit has got to go to our spotters – it is very hard to get around the numbers this week, and Sam Goyette, who works for Juddmonte, said very early on to me that he'd found a very special horse.
"I raised my eyebrows and said, 'Yes, of course!' But when I went down I was, 'Wow, this is very serious horse'.
"I knew that he'd be hard to buy – he is by one of the great stallions around and he has one of the proper back pages. Luckily, I had a client willing to stretch to have a proper go. I can't name the client, but the horse will stay in Europe and won't be allocated probably for a number of weeks.
"He is not actually a huge horse, but to my mind he is perfectly sized horse. I saw Baaeed quite a lot at William's [Haggas] and he had this great width of hip and was not big, and this horse has that same hind end as Baaeed. You can get bigger, rangy horses by the sire but this horse is much more medium size, compact with a huge hind end. He also has great movement and he just looked classy."
He added: "Buying a horse who looks like this by Sea The Stars gives you a chance of having a top Group 1 horse."
Of the market this week, Brown said: "I think it has been strong, really good. This week has been hard buying, I did not buy as many as last week, and I have tried on plenty. It is not completely smooth sailing and buoyant, but I think overall I'd say you'd have to have a positive take away.
"There are a lot of people here, a lot of people bidding 200,000gns+ horses, a totally new crowd has turned up after Book 1 and I am sure there will be another new crowd tomorrow. I thought this week would be tricky, and I would be able to buy what I wanted, absolutely not! This horse, I knew he was a Book 1 horse in Book 2 and I needed to put last week's hat back on and value accordingly."
Goyette was alongside to watch Brown bid and he recalled spotting the colt: "As soon as this horse came out of the box I just wrote 'belter', closed the book and said thank you very much!"
Explaining further he said: "He is just beautifully balanced and everything he does is effortless, his stride is effortless. He just stood out a mile."
The day job for Goyette is as a stud hand for Juddmonte and he has taken these two weeks of Tattersalls yearling sales as holiday.
He said: "This is just a great way to see good horses, stay involved and in touch with people. I was Richard's gofer three years back, and I look at what is listed for me. The horse has to have an action and a walk."
The colt was bred by Sunderlands and was sold by Norelands, he is out of the Dawn Approach mare Miss Alglonne and is a half-sister to Mekhtaal, winner of the Group 1 Prix d'Ispahan, three further black-type winners and three black-type performers.
Under the fourth dam is the Group 2 winner Fair Of The Furze, and her descendants the champion three-year-old White Muzzle and theGroup 1 winner Almutawakel. (19:49)
Lot 1289: the last of two colts catalogued in Book 2 by Galiway makes 150,000gns bought by Roger Charlton
The colt was offered by Keith Harte, bred by Select Bloodstock out of the mare Medical Kiss (Medicean), the dam of three winners from three runners, including the Listed-placed Boomboom Kiss. (19:00)
Logt 1242: "He has been very popular, everyone has liked him," said Ed Player of Whatton Manor Stud after the Gleneagles colt ex Ledena (Pivotal) sold for 325,000gns.
"He has been a super colt, his sire Gleneagles has had a great year and is, of course, sire of Royal Scotsman, who was third in the 2,000 Guineas and is bred on the same cross."
The cross has worked well this year – Melo Melo, by Gleneagles and the recent Group 1 Prix de Vermeille runner-up, is out of a mare by Excellent Art, a son of Pivotal.
The colt was bought by Ed Sackville for Jim Hay, the docket signed as D Farrington / SackvilleDonald.
Jim Hay, who enjoyed a two-year-old winner at Kempton this afternoon, said: "We decided early on this was the one we wanted. We have had quite a few by Gleneagles, we think he is a top-class stallion and we have been buying his progeny. We thought we should go after this one as well. He is out of a Pivotal mare and he has all the pedigree you could wish for. The experts Ed Sackville and Dermot Farrington tell me that that this is a horse with perfect conformation. This is where dreams start!"
The 2021 Tattersalls October Book 2 graduate Royal Scotsman, bought by SackvilleDonald for 125,000gns, has been put away for the year and Hay is looking forward to him being prepared for the Lockinge Stakes (G1) next spring. (16:50)
Lot 1231: bloodstock agent Federico Barberini adds a second by Blue Point to his Book 2 purchases, the agent going to 250,000gns for the colt, a first foal out of the Listed winner and Group 3-placed Lady Ramon (Ramonti).
The February-born colt is from the family of the Grade 1 Flower Bowl Stakes winner Gaily Gaily, the winner of 14 races
The sale was a successful pinhook for Longview Stud – the colt bought by DR Bloodstock for 37,000gns from Blue Diamond Stud at the Tattersalls December Foal Sale last year.
Barberini has bought eight in Book 2 so far for an average price of 151,250gns. (16:45)
Lot 1222 and Lot 1223: two well-bred fillies, lotted one after the other, catch the eye and both fetch over 200,000gns.
Lot 1222 is a daughter of Showcasing and a first foal out of La Rouel (Koadic), a half-sister to Roodeye, the dam of the Group 1 winner Mohaather and the Grade 2 winner Prize Exhibit, who are both also by Showcasing. She made 270,000gns and is bought by Alastair Donald from SackvilleDonald.
She was sold by Corduff Stud, who bred her in partnership with long-term partner Tim Rooney.
Lot 1223 is a daughter of Bated Breath and out of the Group 3-placed Lady Aquitaine, dam of four black-type winners, including this summer's Group 2 winner Lake Forest. It is the further family of dual Group 1 winner Roderic O'Connor.
She was bought by Avenue Bloodstock for MV Magnier from Newsells Park Stud, bred by Sahara Group Holdings. (16:27)
Lot 1194: the sale of this Siyouni colt to Joseph O'Brien for 310,000gns has topped a "great" week for Grangemore Stud. The farm has sold all seven lots offered in Book 2, four fetching six figures and an average price of the seven being 135,000gns.
In Book 1, Grangemore sold Lot 376, a filly by Dark Angel, to Sumbe for 850,000gns. The farm averaged 356,667gns for four lots sold last week.
"He is a smashing colt from a very good back family, Siyouni has had an amazing season and has two of the best three-year-olds around," said Guy O'Callaghan. "This is just a lovely simple horse and I bought him with my brother Robert for €78,000 from Haras d'Etreham and the late Lady O'Reilly."
Continuing to discuss the stallion, he said: "You can't plan these things, but at the end of the say class is permanent and form is temporary and Siyouni is just a class stallion –Paddington coming out this year, just like St Mark's Basilica a few years back, there is a reason people want to buy these colts.
"We have had a fantastic week, Book 2 has been a very strong sale, I was lucky as I felt I had a a real good bunch of horse. Thankfully they have sold accordingly."
Purchaser Joseph O'Brien, who signed under the banner Opm Equine, said: " He is lovely horse, by Siyouni who has had exceptional year and he has come from a good stock and we are very pleased to get him. He is one of the best sires in the world at the moment. He looks like he will will make up into a two-year-old type, he is a strong sort and it is very exciting. Obviously the pedigree goes back very well."
The colt's third dam is the Classic winner Highway To Heaven, the dam of the Aidan O'Brien trained Group 1 winners Magical and Rhododendron, and grand-dam of this year's Classic winner Auguste Rodin. (14:59)
Lot 1163: "He was bred by Nigel and Nicola Welby, they breed under Kingsmead Bloodstock and are based at Yokehurst Farm, they have done all the work," said Ed Player of Whatton Manor Farm after selling this Too Darn Hot colt for 320,000gns.
"The mare was bought for them by Richard Knight. I had heard they had a lovely colt and I was going to get to prep him. All the credit goes to them, the colt turned up to me and their team had done a very good job with him. We had him for eight or nine weeks and he has been a superstar all along, he was one of those that when he walked off the horse box at ours I knew that we'd be in good shape. I never dreamed he'd make that sort of price, I am delighted for Nigel and Nicola, they are such nice people."
He added: "A couple of years back they topped the second day of Book 3 with a Time Test colt [a colt out of Purest sold for 95,000gns], but this is easily their best sale in the ring. They are thrilled and I am so pleased it went so well for them – I was walking the box, but they were walking the box more than me! They have around four or five mares at home and have two in Book 3 to sell."
Highclere Agency was the successful purchaser and Jake Warren said: "He is a magnificent colt, really powerful with a strong good head. He really looks like what you'd expect a good Too Darn Hot would look like.
"The mother was good, she was rated 97, she is a young mare, and he is a really really impressive individual.
"It is a lot of money but the stallion has had one hell of a start. He has already had a three Group winners of the May Hill, the Moyglare, and a Tattersalls winner, he is off to as good a start as any stallion could wish to hope for – so why should this horse not be top class?
He has been bought by Sheikh Isa and will get this horse home, get him broken in, and then he will be evaluated in the new year and we will work out a trainer then."
Of trade this week, he said: "To buy a nice horse is really hard, we have been pushing hard all week and we are going above and beyond budgets to get these nice horses bought. It has been hard tob uy them. It is great for the vendors." (14:43)
Lot 1154: the Churchill colt out of Honor Bound (Authorized), a half-sister to Treasure Beach, the champion Irish three-year-old colt of 2011 and a dual Group 1 winner, is bought by D Farrington/Sackville Donald for 310,000gns.
Ed Sackville was selected as spokesperson and he said: "Dermot and I have bought him together for owner Jim Hay. Churchill has had an outstanding year on the track, headlined by Blue Rose Cen in France. This colt is from a brilliant farm, who bred Authorized and his half-brother Andromede is now a stakes winner, there is plenty happening in the family. Trainer is to be decided." (14:07)
Lot 1151: the Wootton Bassett out of the Group 3-placed mare Hint Of Tint (Danehill Dancer) and sold by Islanmore Stud, is bought by Najd Stud for 300,000gns.
Najd's Saud Al Qahtani, who has been at Tattersalls through from Book 1 and will be here for the Autumn Horses In Training Sale, said: "She was one of the best fillies I saw this morning, she looks a very good individual. She is very nice.
"This is first by the sire we have purchased, and I do think she is outstanding and I hope, Inshallah, she is good for His Royal Highness Prince Faisal and will be a leading filly next year.
"She will be trained in Newmarket and I am waiting for the prince to tell me which one, there are three or four names and one of them will be selected. The Prince is looking to increase his numbers in training in the UK with good quality horses, but some of this week's purchases will also be going to Saudi, the country's racing industry is booming. We buy some for Saudi and some for the UK, and we have a plan to get bigger and better."
Of future plans, he added: "If she wins a big race, she will stay here as a broodmare. We have Saffron Beach in-foal to Frankel here and hopefully, Inshallah, we will get a champion."
The dual Group 1-winning Saffron Beach (New Bay) was bought by Najd Stud at the last year's Tattersalls December Mares' Sale for 3,600,000gns.
The filly was sold by Islanmore Stud and the farm's stud manager Nigel Anderton said: "She is a beautiful filly by a great sire, and thanks goes to the buyer and the underbidder Harry Herbert and Jake Warren, too, they were very disappointed not to get her.
"The stud farm bought Hint Of A Tint as a yearling and she got to a rating of 105, she was a very good race filly. We are now very privileged to have the stock to sell out of her. She has a lovely Sioux Nation who hopefully will come here next year.
He added: "The team at home and here have done a great job producing her."
Islanmore had a draft of two in Book 2 and is due to sell a filly by Ten Sovereigns as Lot 1259 (14:00)
Lot 1145: the Havana Grey Tattersalls Book 2 roll continues... this colt is bought by Anthony Stroud, who outbid Alex Elliott, at 320,000gns, And while yesterday's top-priced lots by the exciting young sire were largely pinhooks, bred and then sold by Whitsbury Manor Stud as a foals, this colt had been retained by the stud for sale as a yearling.
"He is a lovely horse, a very easy moving horses, he has great flow, he goes to Simon [Crisford] who has done well with Havana Grey," saud Stroud. "I did not think he'd make that much, to be honest, but there are many buyers keen to get to Havana Grey, and the pedigree for this colt is there for all to see."
Of business through Book 2's sale, he said: "Trade this week has been good, the statistics have held up, the clearance rate is good. The sales company has done well to finish each evening at 8.15pm, and I think there has been a good buzz here this week."
A thrilled consignor Ed Harper said: "It is always difficult when your nicest horse in the sale is the last horse in your draft and sells on the last day, you are waiting and waiting. They can also drag a bit of interest because everyone focusing on the superstar and it is difficult to point them in another direction.
"I really appreciate Anthony Stroud and Simon Crisford being so keen to get the sires's stock, it is for obvious reasons with Vandeek, but to keep going to get the next one is fantastic."
Harper now is in the great position of thinking about just where to set the sire's fee for next spring, he said: "I am getting a lot of advice, which I do appreciate, but we have trained ourselves not to think about these things until after Book 3. It is definitely an experience."
Of the key to Havana Grey's success, he said: "He is just a phenomenon. He loves life, he loved being a racehorse, now he loves being a stallion. He is the happiest horse on the planet, except when he is disturbed from his feed bowl! His yearlings and foals are the same – when you put a feed in a Havana Grey's bowl, you leave them well alone until they are done.
"They are very easy horses to train, it is a big thing now in today's racing world. I also think that they are born to race, and they are generally very well balanced horses so they deal easily with the undulating tracks."
He concluded: "We bought Hello Glory with our good friend Heather Slade, and it is her best result with a yearling in the sale ring."
Sadly, Hello Glory died this spring, which has reduced Slade's broodmare band to just two, but she is in the happy position of owning a breeding right to the stallion, which she bought "right at the start". (13:34)
Lot 1092: James Ferguson with Chris Waller spends 140,000gns on the Too Darn Hot colt out of the Listed winner Frankel Light (Frankel), sold by Watership Down Stud.
"I have trained for Chris Waller since I started," explained Ferguson after purchase. "The horses train here as two-year-olds, and take advantage of our good two-year-old system, we try and get the horses to Royal Ascot if we can, but the end goal is to send them to Australia as late three-year-olds where they should be competitive.
"The horses we have sent down in the past have done very well – Francesco Guardi, El Bodegon and Wineglass Bay have all run in Group races, and Francesco Guardi might even be running in the Melbourne Cup."
Of this individual he outlined: "This is a lovely horse from Watership Down, Too Darn Hot has done amazing things this season and this horse fitted into the budget. We are looking for horses that look like they will progress with age. This colt has a wonderful family, it is a very attractive pedigree and he is out of Frankel mare and think he is well bought."
The colt's third dam Piquetnol, runner-up in the Prix Marcel Boussac, is an own-sister to Chimes Of Freedom and is the dam of the Group 3 winner Dietrich. (11:58)
Lot 1099: the Camas Park Stud-offerd colt by Camelot, a €75,000 pinhook, gives the farm a profitable return selling today for 210,000gns. He was purchased by SackvilleDonald / D Farrington.
The March-born colt is a half-brother to Lexington Times, winner of the Listed Spring Cup. The Paco Boy gelding has won five races in ttsal and also been placed 16 times, including in the Solario Stakes (G3) and the Horris Hill Stakes (G3). (10:56)
Lot 1082: the first to 200,000gns today is a son of No Nay Never out of the Flower Alley, Listed-placed mare Flower Fashion.
Bred by Branton Court Stud, and sold by Oaks Farm Stables, the colt was purchased by trainer Roger Varian for 200,000gns.
The nine-year-old mare Flower Fashion is the dam of one winner, Drafted by Showcasing and a winner as a juvenile. Her second foal Master Of The Hunt, also by No Nay Never, has been placed twice at two since the catalogue was published. He is trained by Aidan O'Brien and is entered in a mile maiden at Naas on Saturday. (10:42)
Morning, changing weather at Tattersalls this morning, might want to bring a coat.
